#RiseOfTheBadger : Road Ahead Closed, Please Follow Diversion

It’s funny how life always seems to throw curve balls your way. With the best intentions in the world I set myself a task, an adventure I should say, yet once again my attention was torn away and the initial willingness to dedicate my time dissipated into something of a nothingness. Perhaps I should have known this would happen, after all, the path is never straight, it’s windy, it criss-cosses, it doubles back on itself, and is riddled with holes. Before you know it, you have travelled a thousand miles and ended up staring at the same direction sign you started at!

And indeed, I am back to where I started….or am i?

Actually, no, at least I hope not. It’s been a couple of months since I last posted about my adventures into the world of live computer game streaming on twitch, and until recently it had all but fizzled out. I will not bore you with the details of the how and why, something just wasn’t working. Being one to not give up though, the “HoneyBadger” is making a return.

This time a slight difference. It has lately come to my attention that I’m not a great fan of modern games. I do still enjoy a blast at the weekend on PUBG with my fellow team mate Wandering_Hans, but that spark just isn’t quite there anymore. Not how it used to be, the excitement in anticipation of a new release is frankly, lacking. I can’t remember the last time I got genuinely excited about a new game coming out, in fact I can’t remember the last time I sat down to a single player game. Therein lies the problem.

Remember the days before the internet? The days of consoles and computer magazine subscriptions. This was the era that I loved. The Sega Megadrive, the Super Ninentendo, the Gamecube. I could sit and play for hours on end; that is where my passion lies.

A couple of weeks ago, the wife dusted off her old Nintendo Gamecube, we plugged it in and hey presto, it worked. I haven’t looked back since. I have discovered that you can still buy many of the games at bargain prices, ebay and cex are full of them. Its a world that I thought had been left behind, but in fact it is still very much alive, whats more, it’s just fucking ace….albeit hard. Have you ever played “Rocky” – it was and still is one of the hardest games I have ever played! Go in cold and you will be knocked out in the first round.

Striking up “Star Wars Rogue Leader” and flying around in an X-wing taking out tie fighters is still an incredible all consuming feeling. This is the dream come true that I never knew I’d had!

But of course, how does one capture an image from an old games console that uses, red, white and yellow RCA output? That my friends was easily answered with a quick google search. The Hauppauge HD PVR. What a box of magic tricks that is. Its beastly. It captures the image from the Gamecube wonderfully and using software such as Xsplit I can grab that image and send it over to Twitch for all to see. Retro gaming. It’s all so exciting. I even bought my son a copy of FIFA Football from the year he was born, although, he wasn’t quite as excited as I was!

What’s more, this may have started with the Gamecube, but it does’t end there. This evening I stumbled across something that goes beyond my wildest dreams. Sega Megadrive. That’s right, you heard it correctly, SEGA MEGADRIVE. For me, this is the golden age of gaming…..and its coming home to play.

Get ready for the Retro game Party.
